Discovering tomorrow

Faculty of Science

Dear Learner / Parent / Educator

General Information you need to know about Science Discovery Week 2016

The NMMU Science Discovery Week is taking place from Monday, 27 June to Friday, 1 July. This week has become very popular and 300 learners will be selected to attend this year. The purpose of the week is to introduce Gr 11 and 12 learners to the fascinating fields of Science, in a fun and informal setting.

Where to go on Day 1 (Monday, 27 June)?

Registration will take place in the foyer of the New Science Building Auditorium from 08:00 – 09:00. Signage next to the road will direct you to the parking lot of the New Science Building. One of our group leaders will be there to meet you. Please see the South Campus map to your right under 'Files you can download' to help you.

Registration:

Registration will take place at 08:00 on Day 1 (Monday, 27 June) where you will receive a name tag that will act as your passport to the week. Roll call will take place from 08:30 on Day 2 - Day 4 (Tuesday,28 - Friday, 1 July). Do not be late, as the programme will start at 09:00 sharp!

How will you know in which group you are?

On Day 1 (Monday, 27 June) you will be assigned a group as well as 2 group leaders. You will stay in this group for the rest of the week and you will follow the programme assigned to your group. The Group Leaders will take you to your venue each day, so don't worry about getting lost on campus.

The importance of your Name tag:

You will be given a name tag on Day 1 (Monday, 27 June), when you register, and it is compulsory to wear this name tag at all times. You will not be allowed to get a snack or lunch at any time during the day. Your name tag will indicate your name, your school as well as the group that you have been assigned to for the week. Your name tag must be returned on Day 5 (Friday, 1 July) which will count as your entry into our lucky draw.

Lunch:

You will be provided with a snack at 10:00, lunch at 13:00 and an afternoon snack at 15:00. If you have any special dietary requirements, please notify us as soon as possible.

What must you bring with you?

You don't need to bring anything with you! You will be doing experiments, walking all around campus as well as listen to motivational talks.

What must I wear?

You do not have to wear your school uniform, as we know that you will be on holiday. You must wear casual, comfortable clothing as you will be walking all around campus.
